YOUR DENTAL VISIT

What Happens During a Dental Visit?

On your fist visit the dentist will take a full health history. On subsequent visits, if your health status has changed, make sure to tell them.

Regular checkups (ideally every six months) will help your teeth stay cleaner, last longer and can prevent painful problems from developing.

A full examination
Your dentist will perform a thorough examination of your teeth, gums and mouth, looking for signs of disease or other problems. Intra-oral photos will also be taken at this stage. Our goal is to help maintain your good oral health and to prevent problems from becoming serious, by identifying and treating them as soon as possible.

A thorough cleaning
Your check up at ABC Dental will be followed by a complete clean. In some cases where a long time has passed between dental visits, a special periodontal appointment may be needed to remove excess calculus. Using special instruments, your dentist will clean, removing built-up plaque and tartar that can cause gum disease, cavities, bad breath and other problems. Your dentist may also polish your teeth to prevent future plaque build-up.

At ABC we often treat patients with gum disease, click here to see what Whoopi Goldberg has to say about her experience with gum disease.

X-rays
On your first dental visit your dentist will take x-rays. X-rays can diagnose problems otherwise unnoticed, such as damage to jawbones, impacted teeth, abscesses, cysts or tumours, and also decay between the teeth. ABC Dental uses digital radiography, the machine emits virtually no radiation - no more than you would receive from a day in the sun or a weekend watching TV. If you are pregnant, inform your dentist, as X-rays should only be taken in emergency situations. We also don't perform x-rays on children under 10, except in emergency cases.

How Long Should I go Between Visits?
If your teeth and gums are in good condition, you probably won't need to return for six months. If further treatment is required, for example to fill a cavity, remove a wisdom tooth, or repair a broken crown, you should make an appointment before leaving the office. The dentist is there to answer any clinical questions you may have regarding your treatment.

What happens after your dental visit?
At ABC Dental we believe in comprehensive care which why we have a dedicated member of staff to assist you with any further questions regarding your visit, treatment or proposed treatments.
